テレビをAirPlay対応にするために用意すべき最もスタンダードなデバイスが、Apple純正の「AppleTV」シリーズです。元々はテレビでYouTubeやNetflix、プライムビデオなどの映像配信サービスを視聴するためのSTB（セットトップボックス）なのですが、AirPlayの受け手側となる機能も搭載しています。AirPlayはWi-Fiのネットワーク上動作する技術なので、iPadとAppleTVを同じWi-Fi上になるよう設定して連携させます。今回は"Apple TV 4K"を使用しました。32GBモデルでアップルストアの直販価格は2万1800円から。iPadの画面をミラーリングさせるには、画面右上隅からスワイプしてコントロールセンターを表示し、「画面ミラーリング」のボタンをタップ。「11インチiPad Pro（第3世代）」（2021年モデル）から"Apple TV 4K"経由で65インチの4K有機ELレグザに映してみましたが、使い勝手はとても良好。画質の劣化もほとんど分からず、スイスイと動いてレスポンスの遅れはフリック操作時に少し気づく程度。「AppleTV」は2020年のtvOS 14以降、4K解像度のミラーリングに対応しているので、iPadからの画面ミラーリング・ビデオストリーミング用途でも十分実用的です。使い始める前は「外付けのAppleTVを使うのは切り替えが不便なのでは？」と予想していましたが、まったく問題ナシ。Wi-Fiにつながっていれば、iPadでは「AppleTV」がAirPlay対応機器として常時認識。「AppleTV」はHDMIの仕組みを利用してテレビ側の入力切り替えや電源も操作できるので、いきなりiPadから「AppleTV」にAirPlayで飛ばすと、テレビ電源オン→入力切り替えまでが全自動！　便利過ぎます。AirPlayにはもうひとつの動作モードがあります。それがビデオストリーミング。YouTubeやプライムビデオ、AppleTV+などをiPadのアプリで再生する時に「AppleTV」を選びます。この場合、ミラーリングのようにiPadとテレビが同じ画面にはならず、iPadはリモコンのように使います。動画サービスをいろいろテストしてみたところ、YouTubeやプライム・ビデオ、AppleTV+はビデオストリーミングで連携（Netflixはテレビ側のアプリを使うようにメッセージが表示されます）、TVerは画面ミラーリングになりました。リビングのソファでリラックスして観ていたのですが、動画を探すならiPadがラク。でも実際に観るとなるとやっぱり大画面がいいですね。
