Google is amazing. Google Fit comes with 'a function that can measure heart rate with Pixel 6'
I was surprised that the accuracy was better than I expected.
The function to measure heart rate with Pixel 6 alone has been added to Google Fit in early access. It's not an official release and may be removed, and please don't use it for medical purposes! is annotated. This is a previously announced feature.
The idea of being able to take your heart rate without a smartwatch or dedicated heart rate monitor is very Google-ish. I tried it anyway.
Google Fit's "Measure heart rate" feature
When you start Google Fit and scroll down the dashboard, you'll see something like this. When I tapped "Start", I was told to put my finger on the camera, and when I did so, the measurement started. After about 35 seconds, the result came out (see top image).
Similar numbers to Apple Watch
Are these numbers accurate? I was curious, so I measured and compared it at the same time as the Apple Watch. Then, almost almost the same number was displayed on the screen. If it's 98 on Apple Watch, it's 99 on Google Fit, and if it's 104, it's 105. I'm a little surprised by this.
Apple Watch measures your heart rate with an optical sensor like this on your wrist. Moreover, the accuracy of the Apple Watch is not bad compared to a dedicated heart rate monitor. … Google Fit's "heart rate measurement" is practical and highly accurate, similar to a smartwatch! This time I tried it with the Pixel 6 Pro camera, but measuring it with something that is not dedicated to heart rate measurement ... Google magic is too much.
Future expectations
However, it cannot be used to measure activity like a smartwatch, as it is designed to measure by placing your finger on the smartphone camera for a certain period of time. It's amazing and interesting, but I couldn't imagine how it would be used for someone like me who always wears a smartwatch. Is it useful for people who want to check their health at the same time every morning, or for people who don't have a smartwatch but want to know their heart rate after exercising?
Currently, the measurement itself is not possible, but if wrist measurement can achieve this accuracy, Pixel 6 will be a substitute for smart watches by fixing it to the arm. I would like to expect further development and expansion in the future.
By the way, a function called respiration rate measurement was also added. It seemed to read and count the movement of the face and chest with the in-camera. I couldn't see a use for this either, but if you have a habit of mindful breathing, you might be able to make use of it.
For the time being, I was able to taste the feeling of Google. If you have a Pixel 6 series, please try it (According to 9to5Google, the Pixel 6 series is the only smartphone that has "heart rate measurement" and "respiratory rate measurement". Japan The version's release notes also refer to "smartphone camera (selected device)").
