MediaTek announces 8K/120Hz smart TV chip "Pentonic 2000". Adopted products are scheduled to appear in 2022

MediaTek, smart for 8K/120Hz TV chip

Taiwan semiconductor maker MediaTek announced the flagship model "Pentonic 2000" of chips for smart TVs that support 8K/120Hz displays. The chip will be installed in next-generation flagship 8K TVs, which are scheduled to hit the global market in 2022. The Pentonic 2000 is the world's first commercial TV chip manufactured using TSMC's N7 (7nm class) process. In addition to 8K/120Hz displays, it also supports 144Hz for gaming PCs and the latest console game consoles. In addition to supporting 8K/120Hz double speed drive technology, the built-in AI processor MediaTek APU realizes 8K AI-Super Resolution technology. While performing image correction in real time, it will upscale low-resolution content to the native resolution of the display. The company's Intelligent View technology also supports multiple picture-in-picture or picture-by-picture screens. It is possible to display multiple input images on the 8K large screen display at once, and even if the size of the window or the layout of the display changes, the image will be displayed seamlessly, and the image quality of each window will be maintained at the same level. The installed CPU / GPU claims to be "the fastest in the TV industry", and is enhanced by an ultra-wide memory bus and ultra-high-speed UFS 3.1 storage. Combined with a MediaTek Wi-Fi 6E/5G cellular modem, it also provides high-speed wireless Internet connectivity for viewing 8K streaming media and multiple streaming videos simultaneously. In addition, it will be the first commercial 8K TV chip to support the H.266 codec, and will improve compression efficiency, which is essential in the next-generation streaming era. In addition to supporting the latest Dolby video/audio technology, it also supports global TV broadcast standards such as AV1 and ATSC 3.0 for streaming services. Dr. Mike Chang, corporate vice president and general manager of the Smart Home Business Group Division of the company, commented: “MediaTek has accumulated multimedia expertise over the past 20 years and is now the number one provider of chipsets for smart TVs. Continuing our tradition of focusing on pushing things forward, the new Pentonic 2000 chip delivers everything from the latest display and audio tech, to ultra-fast refresh rates, powerful AI capabilities, picture-in-picture streaming, and more to help users It's designed with all the flagship features you're looking for."
