[Barcelona (Spain) March 4, PR Newswire= Kyodo News Agency JBN] Safaricom,Close the Gap, Huawei (Huawei, Huawei Technology) won the TECH4ALL DigiTruck project and won the Global Mobile (GLOMO) award at MWC22 Barcelona for Outstanding Mobile Contribution to the UN SDGs (significant mobile contribution to the United Nations sustainable development goals).
The DigiTruck project, launched in cooperation with Kenyan communications operator Safaricom, the Kenyan Ministry of Information and Communications Technology, Computer for Schools Kenya, GSMA and the international non-governmental organization Close the Gap, belongs to TECH4EDUCATION in the field of education of Huawei's digital inclusion concept "TECH4ALL". TECH4ALL works with SDGs (Sustainable Development goals) to develop skills, applications and technologies in the areas of education, environment, health and development to prevent anyone from being left behind in the digital world.
The DigiTruck project was launched in 2019 to promote digital inclusion of remote and local communities in Kenya. DigiTruck, which converts and retrofits second-hand shipping containers, is a mobile classroom that provides training for individuals and communities who need digital skills most. Equipped with 20 workstations to improve Internet connectivity through computers, tablets, smartphones and Huawei fixed wireless access solutions. All of its electricity comes from solar energy, which will also bring benefits to societies in areas where electricity supply is insufficient.
Since the official launch of the DigiTruck project, more than 2300 students from 19 consulting industries in Kenya have received more than 80, 000 hours of training. Each 40-hour course covers basic digital literacy skills, such as how to use smartphones, the Internet, e-mail and office software. The training will guide e-waste management and include a variety of necessary soft skills, including the creation of business documents, online job search and the launch of online businesses.
Safaricom's Peter Ndegwa CEO (CEO) said, "the company is fully committed to contributing to the UN's sustainability goals by providing connectivity, innovative solutions and digital skills to empower customers in the digital world. This award is an excellent evaluation of our efforts to work with partners such as Huawei to digitally combine our customers. "
The programme has made a significant contribution to goal 4 of the SDGs, namely "ensuring comprehensive, equitable and high-quality education for all and promoting lifelong learning opportunities". Initiatives such as DigiTruck will also contribute to other SDGs activities, such as "Poverty Eradication" and "gender Equality". The improvement of digital skills is also essential to improve job seekers' employment prospects and to support low-income communities with online business models. Digital skills, which in turn lead people out of poverty. While most programmes equalize the gender ratio of trainees courses are also prepared for adolescent girls and women who are severely deficient in digital skills. In 2021, DigiTruck, in partnership with Women in Technology Huawei, trained 55 women in distance tutoring in Garbatzla.
This training is the first experience of digital technology for many trainees and provides the key to releasing opportunities that were previously unnoticed or seemed out of reach.
Oliver Vanden founder and CEO of Close the Gap said: "the DigiTruck program developed by Close the Gap and Huawei has greatly exceeded expectations in turning daunting challenges into opportunities. The full digitization of remote and unelectrified areas can promote the inclusiveness and self-reliance of young people and empower local communities.
In addition to Kenya, DigiTruck is also implemented in many countries around the world to help improve digital skills and bridge the digital divide (information divide).
This is the second year in a row that Huawei has won the Outstanding Contribution to UN SDGs award and the GLOMO award. In 2021, Rainforest Connection and Huawei won the award for the TECH4ALL Nature Guardian project that uses networked sound technology to protect endangered species and ecosystems from threats such as illegal logging and poaching.
The GLOMO Award hosted by GSMA recognizes the contribution of innovative organizations of excellence in changing the way people, communities and businesses connect and evolve in a digital-first world. GLOMO is awarded annually by MWC22 Barcelona.
