The role of the Y combinator who produced Airbnb and Dropbox
新規事業や起業によってイノベーションを創出し、事業を成長させるには、どうしたらよいでしょう？ まずは、ユニークなアイデアと、それを形にするdevelopment力が必要です。また、developmentの過程で、社会のニーズに合致しているか確認するためのプロセスも求められます。加えて、営業やデザイン、プログラミングなどの専門スキルも欠かせません。事業が軌道に乗るまでの資金も必要になるでしょう。起業を成功させるにはあまりにも様々な要素が絡み合っているため、多くの起業家が悩みを抱えてしまいます。こうした課題を抱える起業家を支援する仕組みとして存在するのが、「インキュベーター」あるいは「アクセラレーター」といったプレーヤーです。インキュベーターやアクセラレーターの仕事は、駆け出しの起業家が陥りがちな失敗を避けるよう助言をしたり、パートナー企業や投資家とのパイプ役になったりするのが主な仕事です。支援する起業家へ直接投資する場合もあれば、助言のみを行う場合もあります。
数あるインキュベーターの中でも世界的に知られているベンチャーキャピタルが、ポール・グレアム率いるベンチャーキャピタルの「Yコンビネーター」です。2005年の設立以来、1000社以上のベンチャー企業（スタートアップ）を支援してきました。
Yコンビネーターの特徴は、合宿形式の支援プログラムにあります。倍率3％とも呼ばれる選考を通って参加を認められた起業家は、3カ月間、シリコンバレーに滞在し、Yコンビネーターから助言を受けます。この3カ月間は文字通り寝食を忘れ、製品developmentに没頭し、見込み顧客からのフィードバックを受けなければなりません。スタートアップ支援プログラムの最後にある投資家への発表会で高い評価を受ければ、事業資金の調達に成功し、会社を大きくできるのです。
Yコンビネーターの“卒業生”として、世界中に民泊のプラットフォームを展開するAirbnbや、ファイル管理・共有サービスを提供するDropboxといったサービスが知られています。その他にもHeroku、Redditといったテクノロジー系スタートアップを多数、成功に導きました。今では、Yコンビネーターの合宿プログラムを完遂したというだけで、投資家から注目されるケースもある程です。

Yコンビネーターの成功の秘訣は、助言をするメンターの存在が挙げられます。特に、Yコンビネーターの共同創業者であるポール・グレアムは、自身が起業家・プログラマーでもあり、大きな影響力を持っています。芸術を学んだエッセイストでもある彼は「最も良いアイデアは最初悪いアイデアに見える」などの含蓄のある助言を残しました。ポール・グレアムは、極力早く製品を発表し、ユーザーの反応を見て改善を繰り返すという方法論を採用しています。反復的developmentによってリスクを抑えつつ新たなビジネスモデルを見出す「リーンスタートアップ」と共通した考えと言えるでしょう。このような起業を成功させるための方法論を見出したからこそ、Yコンビネーターは高い確率で起業家を成功へ導けるようになったのです。
Yコンビネーターのビジネスモデルはベンチャー投資です。合宿プログラムに参加する起業家からは参加料を徴収しません。1万～2万ドルの資金を提供した上で、10%程度の株式を受け取ります。年間100社以上のベンチャー企業に投資しているものの、Yコンビネーターの収益に寄与するのは、一握りの成功企業だけです。
例えば、Airbnbの評価額は240億ドルにのぼると言われています。もし、Yコンビネーターが5%の株式を所有していたとすると、その資産価値は12億ドルにもなります。つまり、ほとんどの支援企業が失敗に終わったとしても、一部の企業が世界的企業に成長すれば、大きな収益につながるというわけです。
